Introduction to our Census Products

Please read our census licence before purchasing sets

The Census — An Essential Tool

The UK census records provide vital information about your ancestors. They include full names, addresses, occupations, ages, relationships, gender, place/county of birth and certain medical conditions, recording a snapshot of family life in years gone by.

BDA Census CDs: High Quality sets for every county in England and Wales 1841-1901

We believe we can provide you with a better product and a better service. We are the only UK company developing a range of complete name indexes for our customers. Online and on CDROM.

The benefits of using BDA census CDs are:

  • In independent testing our 1841 census had 30% more readable images than other bi tonal 1841 census publications.
  • We use the best source material available — Silver film for the 1841 which was written in pencil. Diazo for the later years written in pen.
  • We use greyscale scanning where it will give greater clarity.
  • Our border areas are free to those who've bought a set from S&N. Other companies will charge you for them.
  • All our images are scanned in-house by a dedicated team of professionals.
  • We use image-enhancing software to get the best results
  • All scans are quality-controlled*
  • Pages are supplied in Acrobat format, so they can be read, enlarged and printed with the free Adobe Reader
  • We help your search by providing you with area and street indexes where available.
  • Unique Feature: To make your search really easy we provide name indexes for certain areas (at an additional cost, see below)

*Please bear in mind that a small proportion of the original records are in poor condition due to their age and past handling and storage. We can only give you what is available.

Name Indexes by Family Historians for Family Historians

If you know the district, sub-district or street, locating the pages containing records of your ancestors is fairly easy.

However, you may not always know where your ancestors lived — looking through thousands of pages of hand-written records can be a daunting task.

Purchase Name Indexes with your set

This is where S&N census name indexes can save you hours of browsing. They enable you to search for a person by surname, forename and age. Matching entries will be displayed with a reference enabling you to find the original record in our census CD sets.

Some of the indexes alone contain tens of thousands of pages; millions of names! You will be able to pinpoint the one(s) you need in a matter of seconds.

Wherever possible, we provide name indexes to purchasers. These are available in CD-ROM format or online subscription databases.

See Census Name Indexes on CD for latest availability.

Name indexing is an on-going project involving nearly 1,200 volunteers who, in return for their work, get free access to completed indexes and as well as special offers. We also employ UK supervised overseas workers to help with the task. The indexing site is sponsored by S&N Genealogy Supplies which enables them to provide subscriptions from only £5.

The online name indexing project is based at www.TheGenealogist.co.uk and will help everyone gain the most from the census.

Search Aids

Some companies publishing 1841 records use the cheaper diazo film which can mean many blank pages. We scan in greyscale from silver film to give you the best quality.

If you are looking for people in London 1851 we have an 1852 Directory for London for only £17.95 (read Kathy Chater's Ancestors review HERE). This has residential listings, directories are a good way of finding people in the census (see David Tippey's article)

County Set Coverage

The enumeration districts don't follow the county boundaries and are based on parliamentary boundaries. The best way to discover what CD set you need is by using the PRO catalogue.

See our census latest releases to find what set you need.

We also have a coverage CD that contains thousands of pages linked to menus and bookmarks to allow you to find the areas covered by our sets, the CD is £5 but includes a £5 voucher against buying census sets.

A London coverage map is shown on the Sample Pages and Further Information page.

“Thank you so much for the 1861 census. The census is brilliant and with the information from www.TheGenealogist.co.uk I found my great great granddad who I've been searching for, for months.”

S&N’s Objectives

Our aim is to provide access to census records in full, in your own home, on both PC and Mac, at a reasonable cost.

Most family historians have access to computers either at work or at home and, as the cost of Silver Film just for London 1841 is around £12,000, we decided that the ideal solution is to transfer these records onto CD.

To achieve that goal, S&N is working in close partnership with British Data Archive Ltd, our sister company, which is solely dedicated to making the British census records available on CD-ROM.

Why do we have a shrink wrap licence?

People copying or splitting sets has meant that some census sets will not even repay the cost of the microfilm or the wages of the staff involved in publishing them. Such actions jeopardise the availability of an essential genealogy resource.

Personal Use Licence

Census sets come with a personal use licence for the set. This prevents the use of the set by more than one person. The splitting of a set for resale or sharing is prohibited and is a direct breach of this licence.

The census product can only be used for personal research by the original purchaser. This excludes commercial use, library use, loan, provision of a lookup service or print service. This set may not be split or resold. Breach of the above conditions may result in legal action.

Those in breach of the licence will be liable to prosecution by S&N British Data Archive Ltd and may well be liable to a separate action through the Crown.

If you feel unable to comply please do not purchase the sets.
