1891 London Census

Can't find a street on the Master Street Index

This is caused by the print on the original documents not being clear enough on some street names but as they are alphabetically ordered it is simply a matter of paging down to the street name. Load the Master Index on CD 38 and click on the area bookmark on the left and use page down to scroll through the alphabetic list of streets using page down. This will give you the Piece number and folio e.g. RG12/167 folio 147 as on page 4 of the booklet. Look at the index on the back of the booklet for the CD that covers the Piece number and open up that file e.g. R12-167 and click on the folio bookmark nearest to it.

PRO Street Indexes

On the later indexes for City of London onwards they give enumeration districts not folio numbers, the folio bookmarks should therefore not be used, just browse through the piece number given looking for the special page giving the streets summary and the enumeration district. This occurs about every 50 pages. The street should then be on one of the following pages. The street indexes included with the census were generated by the PRO and as with any human endeavour may contain the odd typographical error. If you can't find a street under the reference given, browse either side of the folio using page up and down.

DVD 3 Disc Set

If you have can't open one of the DVD discs it may be due to slight variations in pressings, just return the disc for replacement. If you can't open 2 or more of the DVD discs then you will need a CD set as the discs are not compatible with your system. The format used is DVD9 which is a double layer format to give the fewest discs and the highest data density. If you can't open Piece 324 from the Poplar Street Index simply use File, Open, RG12-324 from within the Acrobat Reader.

Pieces 91,  92, 93, 94, 289, 290, 291 on the DVD set

Our Objectives

Please bear in mind that our objective was to provide the census material available on fiche at £5,000 on CD/DVD at a fraction of the cost. The nature of the material means that it will take time to learn to navigate but will be quicker to use on CD than fiche. Most people will save the cost by not having to take time off work or pay transport costs to the record office. We have checked with the PRO and the fiche supplied are the latest version as is the street index which is labelled format 98. We will be releasing a London 1891 Extra CD with Name indexes and updated files with any further information available we are allowed to publish, this will be only available to owners of the CD or DVD set.
